FMA Celebrates 19th Annual Advanced Laser Application Workshop (ALAW), Partners with Steel Market Development Institute

ROCKFORD, Ill., Feb. 9, 2012 – In its 19th year of educating the laser industry, the ALAW- Advanced Laser Applications Workshop includes a lineup of keynote speakers, technical presentations on laser welding applications, vendor exhibit displays, and open houses. The two-day event, presented by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl. (FMA), begins on Thursday, May 17 at The Laurel Manor Conference & Banquet Center in Livonia, Mich. and has attracted over 5,000 engineers since its inception. The event is co-chaired by industry leaders: Mark Williamson of Johnson Controls, Inc., Robert Ruokolainen of Focus Hope, and Thomas Shelow of Superior Joining Technologies. The program includes more than 20 technical presentations on laser welding and cutting applications and two open houses featuring live welding and cutting demonstrations at TRUMPF Inc. Laser Technology Center and Fraunhofer USA – Center for Coatings and Laser Applications, both located in Plymouth, Mich.

New to the workshop this year, ALAW is pleased to announce the delivery of a “Designing Joints for Laser Welding” technical panel during track three of the Steel Market Development Institute’s Great Designs in Steel seminar on May 16th. The 11th annual Great Designs in Steel brings together more than 1,200 engineering, design, 
technology, policy and academic leaders to provide cutting edge information and insight into the latest trends and applications in automotive steel technologies. This all-day, multi-track program features technical exchanges on new steel technologies including advanced high-strength steels, automotive safety and manufacturing technologies.

During the ALAW event, keynote presentations will be delivered by Dr. Jay Baron, of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), Murali Tumuluru of United States Steel Corporation, and Ronald Krupitzer of the Steel Market Development Institute.
